UK Undergraduate

In the UK, the most popular undergraduate qualifications are the Bachelor's degrees (also called undergraduate degrees or first degrees).

Undergraduate degree programmes in the UK are usually of three years duration although some courses such as architecture or medicine take longer. Undergraduate degrees in the UK are now required for entry into a wide range of careers. British degree programmes incorporate the most up-to-date subject developments, and are underpinned by world-class research and links with business and industry, such as Accounting and Finance, Civil Engineering, Computing Multimedia, Software Engineering etc.

In England the course last three years and tend to be quite specialised from the beginning of the course. For some courses it is possible to enter for second or third year depending on the entry qualifications.

UK Postgraduate

There are two main types of taught postgraduate course in the UK:

UK Master's programmes, which normally consist of classes and seminars plus a dissertation;

UK postgraduate diploma or certificate courses, which consist of classes and seminars (sometimes the same taught elements as a Master's course), but with no dissertation. Some UK postrgraduate diploma courses enable you to transfer to a Master's when you have successfully completed them.

A UK postgraduate research degree is the ultimate opportunity if you want to pursue your own specialist interests. You'll be expected to initiate and develop your topic under the supervision of one or possibly two academics. To be successful, you will need to demonstrate intellectual independence.
